Homeopathic Doctor Sudbury - Infant Colic could also be called Three Month Colic, Colic and Infantile Colic. This condition is seen in babies, who are otherwise healthy babies, show periods of intense crying and screaming which lasts over: 3 hours a day, 3 days per week for more than 3 weeks. This recurrent fussing for extended periods of time with no distinct cause can be strenuous for both the baby and the parents.

Colic normally appears within the first month of a baby's life. It can vanish suddenly, before the child is 3 to 4 months old, but in several cases it can last up to the first year of existence. Normally, the crying often increases during a particular time of the day. In a lot of cases the evening is when the colic sets in. At times indications could worsen immediately after feeding. This is common in babies who have trouble burping. One study showed that babies who are breastfed have a less chance of colic.

The resulting constant crying can have effects on the parents, the family and the child. Problems may come from the crying and the exhaustion caused from the crying. Problems such as relationship stress, breastfeeding failure, maternal smoking, shaken baby syndrome, postpartum depression which affects both new fathers and new mothers, extra visits to the physician and unnecessary treatment for acid reflux. Crying and exhaustion may contribute to suffocation and SIDS. Some studies have connected stressed babies flipping onto their stomachs; along with parents placing fussy babies on their tummy's to sleep as being contributing factors. Several parents become so exhausted that they fall asleep with their baby in unsafe places like on beds with bulky covers or on couches. Even car accidents and maternal obesity have resulted from Infant Colic.

Causes

The most logical assumption seemed to follow a gastrointestinal or GI theory of colic of babies. Normal fussy babies will often grunt, pass gas, double up, cry after eating and have noisy stomachs. Many of these conditions improve with massage or warmth, tummy pressure, sips of chamomile, fennel herbal tea or mint. In some cases, pain medication such as tincture of opium or paregoric has been prescribed. Interestingly enough, about 90% of colicky babies show no evidence of any GI abnormality.

The majority of professionals believe there are a variety of causes of colic comprising: stomach gas from improper burping, intestinal gas pocketed in the intestinal tract, and a muscular kind of colic connected with birth trauma and muscle spasms. There is even a neurological overload theory stating that the baby is over-stimulated and therefore overwhelmed, becoming tired.

There have been various reports that babies cry since they could sense their mother's nervousness. This has been highly debated as babies do not have the capability to differentiate a mother's nervousness from frustration, depression, et cetera. It has been shown that though parental anxiety normally dissipates with successive children, a couple's later children are just as probable to be colicky as their first.

Effect on the Family

The stability of the family can be really tested because infant crying can have a prominent effect on everyone in the household. The exhaustion which often accompanies crying can inflict huge emotional stress on the parents. They may feel stressed out, anxious, insecure, be experiencing low self-esteem and be worried that they are not giving adequate care for their child. Families, who share close living quarters such as military families or those in apartments, can likewise suffer stressed relationships with landlords and neighbors if they also hear the baby crying noisily for extended periods of time every day.

Treatment

Some reports have linking the balance of the bacterias within the intestine. Giving daily doses of good bacteria known as probiotics has seen some success. These probiotics are called Lactobacillus acidophilus or Lactobacillus reuteri. One study gave eighty three colicky babies Lactobacillus reuteri and this had reduced their crying time. After the first week, their crying time had improved by 20%, from 159 minutes a day versus the original 197 minutes a day. After a month, these babies improved 74% less crying time, averaging 51 minutes a day versus the 197 minutes. Providing the Lactobacillus reuteri probiotic drops showed a 95% positive response to the colicky babies.

These days, the response which is suggested for healthy babies to use treatments like stomach massage, burping, gas release technique and emotional support. These are all noninvasive and non-medical treatments.

There is a rhythmic calming effect known as the "5 S's," this stands for Swaddling, which is carefully done so as to avoid overheating, and enabling the hips to be flexed; Stomach or side, placing the baby on their back is the only recommended sleep position however, it is the worst position for trying to comfort a fussy baby; Shhh Sound is performed by making a strong shush sound near the baby's ear in order to replicate the sound of blood pumping through the mother's veins in utero, some individuals utilize a CD of womb sounds or white noise for this; Swinging the baby while supporting the neck and head, incorporating tiny jiggly movements no more than 1 inch back and forth, and Sucking, which means allowing the baby to suckle on the breast, a pacifier or a clean finger.

Chiropractic adjustments have shown successes for the baby. Some specialists feel that the backbone of the baby may become compressed when passing through the birth canal, particularly in traumatic deliveries and long labours.
